Lee's advice is good. The electronics that checks the brake/tail light circuit are extremely sensitive. YOu'll find that many E38 owners have the exact same problem.

I recently replaced a burnt out brake light after the "check brake light" warning came on. Replacement bulb works fine. Warning light still on. Any solution? Thanks
