Now anoter question for those who actually drove all pieces involved : how does a 740i compare to Audi A8/S8, and a Jag XJ8/XJR in all terms, but most of all in handling. I already got some input on S-class and a STS, but there still is room for your comments. After that S8 thing in "Ronin" I kinda got impressed . . .
I was impressed by the A8. Both the A8 and the Jag have sumptuous interiors, more so than the 740. I don't know about the S8 but the A8 is an impressive driver. I found it to be almost as engaging as the BMW. Resale is terrible and the thought of repairing an aluminum body car does not appeal to me. The Jag is shy on interior room compared to the others. I like the rear drive handling, much better than they used to be. Still a bit removed from the BMW which I believe offers the BEST handling in this class by a longshot.
The A8 handled really nicely, but not as sharply as the bmw, but the S8 may have improved that.Perhaps not as important the nav center was just a rectangular box in the instrument panel above the steering wheel, with only a little diagram to show arrows about the direction to turn, with no map display. The xjr is more powerful and faster than any bmw, including the 750, but I found the seats to not be as supportive, and the car has surprisngly small dimensions inside and I didn't like the feel of the steering wheel.
I bought the 740S01 after walking away from a delivered merc E55 because I thought it's ride was too harsh. The 740S was just right, even though the steering ratio is 3.8 turns lock to lock.It just felt better. With the new ones coming out in a year with 340 hp they should be better than either of the other two cars.Resale value on the S8 might be better than theA8, but there are so few sold in the states that no good record can be had on them. But the new A8s were being cut by 8-10 thousand dollars a year ago because of poor sales.
