I've got a 95 740iL and never had any cooling system problems. If the car quit because of overheating you've got BIG problems - warped heads, scored cylinders, etc. Might as well be prepared for a new engine, unless you were very lucky and the car quit before it got really hot. You said you had no warning. Does the temperature gauge work? Should be near the middle of the range normally. Even if the gauge was not working you should smell the anti-freeze or see steam. These are the major warning signs of a cooling system leak.
