I had a similar problem with my 1995 740il. Right now I'm driving a loaner while it's being fixed at the dealer.

On Thursday last week I drove to work as usual, parked and was walking away from my car when I heard a loud pop sound and when I looked back there was steam pouring out from under my hood and coolant spilling out the bottom of the engine.

I looked under the hood with flashlight and saw a long crack running down the length of the plastic tank right under the coolant filler cap.

The dealer said the thermostat got stuck but wind blowing through radiator was sufficient to cool water and engine but when I parked the pressure built up as the engine continued to transfer heat into coolant fluid and finally radiator gave in and tank cracked under pressure from water inside. Radiator, thermostat and reservoir tank are all being replaced.
