Check out Mark W's sweet M5 drivetrain conversion to his E-32 (on the E-32 board)....you may want to contact him....may be less work to find a doner car... a big block Chevy does sound intriguing.

I have spent the last week with the alleged difficulties of converting my 740il to a 6 speed buzzing around in my head. The Dinan guy told me that a Euro version of the ECU programming would be needed. What I don't understand is, if I install a 540i 6 speed, why can't I also install the US 540i ECU for the same (M62) motor? Would my 740il M62 motor understand or even care that I would be telling it it was now a 540i?

To add to the frustration I could buy and install a 575hp (baseline) Chevy crate motor & a Jericho 5 speed road race transmission in the car, effectively trashing the dammned ECU's altogether, and all for less than $15k. That would beg the question...."When is a Bimmer NOT a Bimmer"??

Is the 540i M62 ECU compatable whit the 740i/il M62 ECU?
Is there anyone out there (quote from Pink Floyd's The WALL) that is versed in the ECU issues attendant in this matter?
