Well, I had mine towed also as it was covered, and I live ~20 miles from BMW service dealer. No way could I have driven it. Turns out the waterpump went out. I talked to one of the salemen at the dealership while we were waiting for the paperwork and I was telling him about the waterpump and the mileage and he said that's about right, i.e. that's about the lifespan of a BMW waterpump. I would have thought (and I think I was led to believe) that cooling system parts were designed so that abrubt failures were very rare, i.e. designed so that they failed slowly. I know this: radiator hoses have been designed since the early 80's to "bulge" before failing and the lifespan of hoses since then were ~100K miles, so there shouldn't be any guess-work there. Apparently the E38 waterpump employs a design which can fail abrubtly. And I would have thought the thermostat would not be the old spring-type which could fail in the "closed" position. Someone please enlighten me if I'm misspeaking.
