I had a problem with my 99 740iL where the transmission would suddenly start slamming into gears and then eventually not shift out of 2nd gear. No warning or check lights would come on.

The dealer has diagnosed this and reports that it is caused by a bad wiring harness and a software update. Is this really a possible solution? It sure sounded like a mechanical problem to me where the transmission was going
into limp home mode.

Thoughts?

It sounds very plausible to me.

All modern transmissions are computer controlled---if the computer says "do this" the transmission tries to do it. If it is at an inappropriate time it will 'slam' into gears instead of shift smoothly.

At some point the signals coming into the computer were screwed up enough that it decided to go into limp home. This might happen if the transmission had a mechanical flaw, but it coudl also happen if the computer were malfunctioning and thinking that something is wrong when it isn't, or because it is malfunctioning because the computer is ordering it to do the wrong thing.
