I get the message,"check side lights" on my screen of my '98 740iL. The side markers work correclty with the turn signals.

Check your front turn signals. If it is the turn signals, you should also notice that the "bad" side flashes at a higher frequency than normal when you turn it on. This is another was that you can tell when there is a problem. I just had the same issues on my 95 740i. Bulb cost about $2.00, time to replace is about 2 minutes.
