Just had mine replaced under warranty on a '97. Same symptoms you describe. Works fine now.

You have the classic problem that all earlier E38's suffer from. It appears that the solder in the display card over time & you loose some of the dots. Best option is to replace it with the up-dated one. If you’re still under warranty, free. If not it's $350-$400.

Some have made mention on removing the panel & re-doing the solder.

Let me know if you come up with something better.

Does anyone have any idea why I am missing dots on front display. For example my temperature is missing part of 7 in 71 degrees and some messages on computer display. Please help!
