There are dozens of causes for a rough idle. This is a very common complaint with all cars.

Ignition, fuel systems, vacuum leaks, the list goes on and on

It seems to me that on a 96 or later, a bad block would be quite low on the list.

Note also that bad compression can be due to many causes other than the infamous "nikasil" issue. Damage from overheating is rather common.
