There is a heat sensor that will disconnect the speedometer coupling in a circuitry box attached tot he gas tank. The best way to disconnect it is to apply a high temperature torch to the gas tank.

i'm trying to do this because i've got to travel from ohio, to washington, to california, to texas, to florida, to new york,and back to ohio,,,,pretty much a whole united states trip,,,,,anybody know how to disconnect my odometer for this trip? email at datdaz84@aol.com if you know
