Power Steering Strainer (archive)

The fluid was low in my Power Steering/Self Levelling Suspension Reservoir. The car is a 1995 740iL. In checking the level I wrecked the strainer. How important is this strainer? It appears to me to do nothing other than catch any dirt etc when adding fluid. On the other hand BMW have gone out of their way to put it there!
