You all are missing the boat on this. Except for safety and emmissions equipment you can do anything you want to your car. It only becomes fraud if you fail to declare it when the vehicle changes ownership. For example if you have the odometer replaced because of a problem, you have to declare it on the vehicle title. So he can do whatever he wants so long as he declares it. This is what carfax is supposed to catch.

By the way if you do disconnect you odometer, you will lose all of the other speed related functions too. Speedometer, cruise control, some OBC functions, etc. From my perspective its not worth the effort.
