"notchy" gas pedal normal? (archive)

I was just up in Orlando visiting a friend and drove his new 740iL Sport around. As I was realizing that his steering wheel is mis-aligned to the left, I noticed that the gas pedal moved in notches. I'm used to a smooth pedal. Is that how all E38's are, or should he have it lubricated? It was quite annoying.
