If any of you have had a windshield replaced -- mine was because of a 6" crack caused by a stone -- make sure the windshield repair folks are careful. My insurance company, GEICO, recommended Safelite Auto Glass do the repair. They came right to my house, and 3 hours later, I had a nice new windshield. Well done.

3 months later, I decide I'm going to sell the car (I have two other BMW's). I bring it to the dealer to get an estimate, and they tell me they can't read the VIN # at the bottom of the windshield because the idiot who replaced it put adhesive sealant right over the VIN sticker (not a plate, a sticker). I lose my temper a little, and call Safelite. They send another guy out, with another windshield, and this guy pulls the sealant up, with half the VIN sticker attached to it!

I call BMW North America. I ask them how much trouble it will be to get another VIN sticker. Reply? "An act of Congress." It was less trouble than that. To cut to the chase, you have to find your BMW North American field rep (mine was Eric Luchsinger -- nice guy!). He has to match all the VIN #'s on the car, fill out a form, and fax it to BMW Germany. BMW Germany takes their time, and a couple of weeks later, they send it to BMW North America in New Jersey. In return, they send it to your BMW dealership of choice. The interesting part? It cost $0. The fedexing they did from BMW N.A. to my dealership, etc. cost me nothing. But now I have a 3rd new windshield within a 4 month period. I sold the car to a really nice guy--obviously I shared the whole story. This is just an FYI if you have to get your windshield replaced... Make sure these $7/hour techs take their time!
Mark
