I'm getting ready to pour through my owners manual, but wondered if any of you know the causes for a check engine light to come on. The car is a '97 750iL with 72K miles. My wife was driving the car today and said she noticed the light was on, but not sure when it came on (it was not on last night when I drove it last).

Are there a million different things that cause it to come on? Is it safe to drive it to the dealer, or should I get it towed? Am I nervous over something that is potentially not a big deal?

Anyway, any help or insight is appreciated...

Kevin

Same answer as "HENRY", my '96 740iL had the "Check Engine" light come on suddenly. Had the dealer (stealer) check the O2 it was replaced. You can do it yourself and seve over $ 100.00 bucks. Check the connection first, then change the 02 sensor. It should clear it up.
