Mine came on a few weeks ago when I started my car which was sitting at the airport parking lot for a couple of days. After running the vehicle for a bit (re-start a couple of times) it went away. I agree w/comments from the board, that it is a OBD-II (On Board Diagnostic) related issue -- emmissions control. Ever since the OBD-II came into effect many manufacturers have had to address the "Check Engine" malfunctions. It is usually caused by several sensors (mainly O2) but it can also be related to sensors in the fuel tank, etc.Don't worry about damage to your engine for these type of problems. The critical check engine symptoms that you should worry about are overheating concerns and oil starvation, etc.
My 2 pennies.
