I see you've drifted over here from the E39 board :-) The E38 is one of my favorites too, so I lurk around every now and then. Here are some answers to your questions.
Phone:
As far as I know, E38s produced from 3/97 up to 01/00 will be able to use the CPT8000, but without voice recognition. This can only be done by retrofitting the digital phone adapter harness. 7 series produced from 01/00 (actually late December of '99) will have the necessary connectors for the voice regognition system and you will have no trouble with those. The phones are standard on 2001 7-series, and the CPT8000 is VPC-installed from January 15, 2001. From September of 2000 to Jan. 15, it is VPC-delivered. All 750iLs (and 740iL Protection models) produced from 03/99 up to 03/00 can be retrofitted with the new phone (at least the CPT7000) on a customer request basis free of charge. I gathered this information from various service bulletins and the BMW wireless site, so I'm pretty sure it's correct. However, since a lot of this is so confusing at times, someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
Navigation:
Starting September of 2000 (I think that means all 2001s), the new wide screen (6.5" diagonal measurement) on-board monitor replaced the 5.5" LC display on E38 and E39 vehicles. The wide screen has a 16:9 aspect ratio. It has a larger display area and higher resolution (400 x 234 pixels). Font size is enlarged, providing better legibility with less distortion of the screen.
Also, the new screen incorporates the "Ad-TFT LC" (Advanced Thin Film Transistor LC) display, which provides almost constant contrast level under all ambient lighting conditions.
As far as retrofitting goes, it can probably be done to a car with the existing 5.5" navigation system, provided you ugrade to the MKIII system and code the navigation software with version 16.1 or higher
Unfortunately, I haven't had the pleasure of sitting on an active comfort seat.
I hope that helps. I sure wish I could have a 750iL to put next to my 540. That is one helluva beast! I agree with you on the dash, but you gotta love that blue piping.
