I'm changing the oil in my wife's 740 and the oil filter won't come out of the canister. I've done this many times in both hers and my 540 but the (*&^$$^ thing is stuck and if I try to pry too vigorusly it will tear and then I'm really in a fix. Any suggestions?

Typically, when you unscrew the big oil filter cover cap, the filter is stuck to the inside of the cap. It pops on and off with enough force that it could confuse a novice.

But from your description, the filter appears to be stuck in the canister and not on the cap. And you are not a novice. Is the design of the E38 system different than the design of the E39 system with which I am familiar?

What exactly is stuck to what? In either case, can't you just rip the old filter to pieces in order to get it out of there? What would be the harm? There's really nothing in the canister that is delicate.

Dave Z.
