I changed my battery and did not have to reset the theft code on the radio. All I lost was the date and time on the panel display that was easily reset. I think the radio theft code trips when you unplug the radio and somehow maintains it for battery power replacements. The same is true with the service indicator. Mine did not change. I only had mine unhooked for about 5 minutes while I changed the battery. If you do have to reset the radio, you can get the code from the dealer by giving him the VIN and the serial number of the radio. If you need to know how to get the radio out let me know. Good luck.
Sorry about your battery, but glad you got it diagnosed.

I read in previous posts that after disconnecting power, one needs to enter the radio code to enable it. Luck has it that I do not have the radio code and am trying to avoid the code installation trouble when changing the battery. Any ideas how to replace the battery w/o the need for the code later?

Yep. I have decided to replace the battery. It turns out that it is the original, unsealed battery. Probably needs replacing anyway. If that does not work, I am calling a stealer ...
