BMW is recommending Synthetic now. I am using Castrol 10W30 Synthetic. You can get that about anywhere. Of course BMW would like you to buy there BMW Syntheic brand. But, you can bet since they are in with Castrol, Castrol is really making it. Just find a good brand of Synthetic and you will be fine. I have seen people on the board post Mobil 1 and others. 5W30 or 10W30 is what I have seen being used. If you do decide to change the oil yourself you will need to get an oil filter from a dealer or a parts supplier. You can't get the filters at the local auto store or at least not here. I take the entire bottom shield off when I change the oil. If you do this you do not have to jack up the car. Good luck.

I've been getting up the nerve to try changing the oil on my wife's 740i and am really annoyed at BMW specifying 15-40w oil. Where did you get that stuff? The only thing I found out here at the local pep boys was some brand called Proline. Never heard of it. Is it any good? What brand are you using?
