1996: New 4.4 liter engine. Horsepower remains the same but torque goes up from 295 @4500 rpm to 310 @3900 rpm. More responsive engine overall. Also, standard steel sunroof turns into glass moonroof.
1997: Side impact airbags standard for front seat passengers. Also, navigation system becomes available but fitted to very few cars this model year.
1998: DSC becomes standard. HPS head airbags also standard and rear-seat side airbags become optional. Navigation system becomes more available and is fitted onto more cars. New AC control panel as well (although this was retrofitted to many pre-98 cars).
1999: Mild face-lift with scalloped headlights, crystalized taillamps, and chrome strip on the trunk. Xenon lights become standard equipment, and a sport package consisting of 18-inch rims, blackout trim, lower gear ratio, and vavona redwood interior trim becomes available. The 4.4 liter engine receives double VANOS variable valve timing and torque rises from 310 to 324.
2000: Sport pack becomes available on
740iL/750iL model, sans the lower gearing. Navigation system becomes standard equipment.
2001: Clear-lens headlights and tail lights, lower body panels painted instead of being black.
