Yeah, you would think the "stealers" would know and keep on top of this stuff, but then again, they have to sell that inventory of 15w40 they have sitting around to some sucker. I bought 1 quart from them as a reference, but will go back to have them look up that bulletin and maybe bitch to them some. The guy at the counter said that I should stick with the 15w40 and I was kind of wary. Anyhow, I opened up the oil filter canister and even though the records show the car should have gone nearly 5000 miles since the last oil change, the oil looked brand new and clean. As you may suspect, the car is a recent purchase (CPO) and I'm still kind of wary to do anything myself to what seems like very expensive machinery. I'd heard that to replace the engine on that thing runs like 15 grand or something like that. Anyhow, thanks again for the valuable tips.

Service bulletin S.I. 02 12 98 is where I got the latest BMW oil recommendations. Ask the dealer to look it up if you want to read it. You would think that the Dealers would know the latest recommendations and be providing you with that information.

Thanks for the tips. I dropped by the dealer today and inquired about the oil that was specified (15w40) and he showed me a bottle of BMW motor oil. It wasn't even synthetic and it was like $2.50. Synthetic 10w30 huh? I'll definitely look into it.
