Rough idle is hard for the DIY (do it yourself) guys to diagnose because of the lack of diagnostic equipment. I think because you have gone this far with the dealer you will have to continue until it is fixed. I would hold them accountable and let them know that you expect this problem to be fixed and do not have a unlimited bank account to let them guess at the solutions. I would be a little more tackful and say, "what if the DME replacement does not fix the problem, what would be the next step and will I be billed for something that does not work." The Dealer does have the diagnotic equipment and a well trained technican/mechanic should not be guessing. Especially at the prices they charge. A policy of "We can't take back electrical parts" is not excuse, when they are doing the work. If they will not work with you in a reasonable fashion, it is time to deal with someone else. This is coming from a once technican/mechanic and fair is fair. A DIYer can guess and change out parts much cheaper. A dealer should deal in solutions at the minimum cost. That means being right the 1st time 90% of the time. I haven't replace my DME so maybe someone else can give you some insight on their symptoms. Good Luck.

Has anyone had to change their DME computer? My car has been idling very rough and after trying a few spark related repairs, the BMW dealer is suggesting to replace the DME unit. They have done all the repairs so far, and I am assuming they have thought about the fuel side. Dealer says the #1 cylinder is firing intermitently. Does this sound right?
