Problem solved thanks to idea from competing
cold air systems and other posts. Shield
the filter within the engine bay. East Coast
Intake Systems offers slick kits. Although,
not for the 740. Probably because nobody
screws with these cars, except the fanatics.

I am wondering about one disadvantage of upgrading to
a cold air intake system. Cleaning the darn filter is
a royal pain! Does anyone know how disruptive it is
to routinely (twice/year) remove the front bumper?
The filter is stuck behind the bumper and you cannot
access it from under the hood. I should have stuck
to the tride and true filter under the hood. If the 427s
can take in radiator air, then my 4.4 should not have
any complaints.

I'm going to rewire the intake and take measurements to
see if there is a difference. If I don't see any, then
everyone will have a way to save $300. The filter runs
about 50 from K&N. Maybe even use a larger diameter.
