How hard a job and how do you change a thermostat? (archive)

I think I might try to replace the thermostat on my 740iL as I have read this is one of the potential solutions to a rough idle when the AC is running.

My question is how hard is it to replace, and are any special tools required or any thing I should know before attempting this job. Do I need to remove anything first?

Also, where can I get a thermostat other than the dealer? Does NAPA carry them for BMW's?

Thanks for your help!
