I have just bought an E38 with 120,000 miles on it, It also had a knock, so Ill explain, in case you have a similar problem. the top suspension spring and damper site in a rubber top mount attached to the body, this eventualy brakes up, an easy and cheap job to fix, if you require more details mail me
