Yes, the head light covers do become pitted after awhile. Solutions are to remove them and polish them with a good plastic polish. I think Maguires was recommended. I have not tried this but most say it works. You can polish from the outside but most say you need to clean them on the inside too. I don't know if the dealers will just sell the covers. You will have to check. I get parts like this from Hendrick BMW. 800-476-8322, 25% off with club discount. I can't help with the rear shade. Mine works fine. (there's your joke) I suggest looking at the shop manual. I got mine on CD from Central Letter Shop 973-808-9595, P/N 01579788607, $154. There are several different versions available at different prices. Give them a call and they will fax you a list of what are available. I don't think there are any others out there like Bentley, Chiltons etc. Good luck.

I'm just coming into the ways of 740dom and so, at the risk of asking something that may be common knowledge among you folks, here goes. . . My 1996 740 iL has badly pitted/etched and generally "foggy" headlight covers. Is this common? What is the cure? Can you replace just the glass covers or is it an entire housing affair that costs a bunch?
Also, the rear window power shade screen isn't functioning well. It works maybe every 10th time you hit the button and seems to run out of steam before fully extended (insert joke here as you see fit). Any quick cure?
Finally, any shop manual recommendations?
