Congratulation. I am sure you're feeling good about your accomplishment. The stealers, let me tell you, without all the sofisticate diagnostic equipments they are just like any other DIYs (they're just more expensive). Now you have done it, could you share with us how do you replace that thermostat and water pump assuming that we dont have the service CD-manual. thx,
I finally cured the rough idle that has plagued my '97 740iL for over a month. My dealer and another independent garage could not find the problem after replacing the valve covers, the battery and alternator, and the DME. But thanks to this forum I found out a common problem was the thermostat and waterpump. I replaced the thermostat (very easy) and although it helped at first somewhat, the problem came back.
I just replaced the waterpump and WOW, it was coming apart internally!!! I couldn't believe it even worked at all! I am going to show it to the dealer so they can help future customers with the same problem. I drove the car for about 10 miles and it has not idled roughly at all. Hopefully this is the real fix!
Thanks again to all for all of your advice!
