There is indeed a 2.8 Litre Straight Six version of the E38. Not the most powerful of the range but powerful enough to pull itself along. I am not sure whether a 728iL was ever produced, but As I only know of 728i, I can not comment on that.
730I/AL is next up with a 3.0L V8, the same as that of the E32 730 V8. 735I/AL with the 3.5 V8 is next followed by the 740, 4.0/4.4L V8 (Depending on year) and of course, the mighty 750i/Al with the 5.0/5.5L V12 (again dependant on year)
Those were the only E38 models ever produced.
