is it me or is the whole system for replacing lamps needlessly complicated?

i spent more time than i expected trying to fit the grooves in on my brake lamps...those damn things didn't seem to fit no matter how many times i tried. i finally got them in, but seems like way too much effort (particularly on the left-hand side near the cd changer)

my bulbs also seem to be going out sooner than they really should...seems like i'm always changing one bulb or another -- any one else experiencing this?

When replacing Stop Lamp Bulbs, be sure and use the 'silver' base bulbs NOT the brass base. I kept getting a message (after replacing the right side Brake Bulb) that the bulb was burned out. The dealer offered to replace the entire unit for $200 each, as they 'both' shorted out. I read on a post here that you should never replace a BMW with Brass base bulbs. I replaced mine with one purchased at Pep Boys for about $4.00 (for 2)and the problem disappeared. Thought you might like to know this in the event you replaced the bulb with a brass one and had problems later.
