It is true that someone erroneously stated that there was supposed to be some early E 38s that had the older 5.0 L. motors, but he never proved his case.

Mine is about as early a E 38 as you can get, with a last five VIN of 66013, and it definitely has a 5.4 liter (M73) motor. Another fellow checked out another even earlier car with a VIN of 66002, and it also has the 5.4 liter motor.

This has been discussed before. I believe it was found that some of the early E38's had the 5.0 engine.
