Finally figured out after months of troubleshooting that the engine miss I was hearing, especially at acceleration was a bad cat converters. I took my 97IL with 89,000 miles to a independent BMW shop. They initally found only one cat to be defective so they replaced it. That evening when I picked up the car I noticed my A/C was not working . The console lights were on and the compressor was working but no air was blowing. After further review I had no defroster, heat or ventilation of anykind. Add to that the car still performed the same way it did when I took it in.

First, the other cat was also bad. Now first I thought the one that was changed was changed and not defective. But I did notice that with the first cat changed I no longer heard the rattling under the car. So I knew this was a case that both cats were obviously bad. And when they changed the other cat the car no longer had the miss that I was hearing and the performance was back to original.

Back to the ventilation problem. The shop said that my control module and the fan blower had burnt out. My problem is the blower was working when I took it in. Is their anything I should investigate to determine if this is just a coincidence or have I been had. Has anyone else had the blower just stop with no apparent warning. I did check the fuses and they were fine. Could they have causes the problem when they changed the cat on the passenger side.

By the way the cost of the parts were not that bad but the labor because these units are behind the dashboard is the killer. A total of 8 hours to change. The only good thing was I has the manual control style controls of the early 97's changed to the digital control unit.

Any advise is appreicated.

Cherry
