CD Changer (archive)

The CD changer of my 1995 740iL is sending me a "cd error" message. I tried the reset procedure but it didn't work either. The unit accepts the magazine, but after checking each cd stops moving the it and then the message "CD error" appears in the display.

A friend told me that a "chip" inside the unit is fried. How can I know if it actually is or where the problem lies before going to a repair shop where someone will try to sell me a new one right away?
