The repair was :

new steering lock.
new NLA lock with code
Ign. switch

The key got stuck in the "on" position with all
electric on.I had to disconnect the battery.
I could turn the steering wheel.
I hope it helps

What was the repair?
This problem occurs to me on a semi-regular basis, '98 740iL. I try the ignition again while making sure the steering wheel is not locked, and it works.
Is this similar to older cars where the steering wheel will lock, and the ignition will not turn until the steering wheel is "jiggled"? Sorry, this may not be a clear description.
Don't know if the E38 has this feature.

I had the same problem on my 95 740 I two weeks ago. It was US $ 442 to fix it. They had to order the parts from germany.

Anybody ever have this problem?

Key won't turn in the ignition enough to start the engine. It will turn a little, enough to start the electrical system (but now I can't get the key to turn at all, and the electrical system is still on.)

There really weren't any warining signs -- never had a problem until this morning. The ignition lock cylinder seems a little loose.
