My gear shifter was misadjusted aftr the console top wood peices was replaced. As a result I couldn't turn the key easily or properly. There is a locking mechanism that is connected with the gear selector. Could this be a possible cause?

The steering wheel does lock whent he key is removed from the ignition switch. If the wheels are turned and are trying to twist the steering wheel at all, the pressure on the lock can cause the ley not to turn easily or not at all. When the pressure is released from manually turning the Steering sheel, the key operates easily.
Good luck wiht this, and I hope it does not require the repair described above :-(
