Rear- Besides the design points made I feel the overall approach and the tailight detail is way too close to MBZ for comfort. Even without questions of plagiarim it does not strike me as uniquely BMW.
Profile- Here's where the trunk lid's "Tacked On" look strikes me the most. . The crease line wrapping into the talilight only serves to emphasize the awkward trunk effect. The raked roof line doesn't seem right for the car this is supposed to be.
Front - All the detail commenst are right on the money. Someone else below said it better... Looks like Garfield!.
Overall - that so many people find it necessary to take apart details to critique or praise is in itself the strongest endictement. It just doesn't have "IT". If you have to ask...(what do you like about it)...
Below is an analysis of the look and feel of the new 7 series. My friend and I took a long look at the images (he has done a lot of design work both in products and the automobile industry). Overall the car is not a great design. It has some great aspects but it also has some major warts.
Now before you get angry. I am a huge BMW fan and so is my friend. We just took an clean look at the new official pictures and made our analysis. Please add your viewpoint (positive and negative). We did not get into the features of the car, only the design.
Back - 8
Not bad. Overall shape is an evolution from the previous 7 series (maybe a lsightly inflated, bulging version). High bumper line is slightly aggressive but the skirt keeps a conservative shape. General tail light shape carried over from previous model but cleaned up nicely. Could look great in a silver or dark color with clear turn signals. Reflectors on trunk need to go as they break up the clean lid that dips into the bumper.
Profile - 7
Long hood (room for a V12) and short rear has the driver sitting in what is almost the center of the car. Hood line doesn't drop towards the front making the car less aggressive. Wrap around headlights offer an awkward looking front-quarter (almost makes it look like it is wearing sunglasses). Roof line is very clean and has a great flowing shape that continues on the top of the trunk. Interesting straight cut line for the back of the rear doors. Chrome lining should be removed. Rear quarter is definitely a miss. The extended trunk and dropping, curved sidelines create a dettached feeling that does not match the rest of the car. Wrap around tail lights are nice but bring in cues from the S class. Mid line continues in back and cuts through the fuel tank door but does not appear on the front quarter which is unbalanced. Side skirts extend down and make the car feel very big and bloated.
Front - 2
The car falls apart in front. A very awkard looking lamp assembly that has the turn signals above the lamps and has the now characteristic drooping effect. Kidney grill is placed very high in the face and is a very bland shape while the BMW logo is pushed up farther on the hood.. The car has an overly boxy shape that seems to drop straight down on the sides (no real wheel flares). The bottom lip is very strange in its layering, embedded fog lamps, and gives the car a sad look (some have described it as Garfield without his lasagna) Roof and windshield lines save the front from being a complete disaster.
Interior - 4
Almost a GM minivan but with nice wood. The line from the gauge cluster over to the screen is forced. The steering wheel would be a clean shape except for the ridiculous buttons on the gripping surface. Pod/armrest in the middle is very awkard. Is it an armrest? Place an arm there and get it blasted by the vents... Is it a control surface? Thigh rubs against the seat controls and you are moving while you are driving. The i-Drive joytick is nicely treated but may be very awkard for passengers. vents are also treated nicely however the drawers/storage areas look terrible. i-Drive interface looks very nice. Door paneling is over dramatic.
