BMW specifically came up with this system to keep driver distraction to a minimum. Modern cars were beginning to employ far too many buttons, switches, and nobs. Making use of this single, moveable, rotating, clickable nob eliminates a great deal of confusion, reaching, fiddling, etc. And with the screen at the same height as the speedo/tach, it's easy to take quick glances while you're driving.
I think they've really hit on something here.
