not sure about the 540, but it can't be much different than the xenon in the 750...

i was riding down the highway and got a message on the dash saying "check front headlight"... or something to that effect. xenon was out. i turned the lights off, and then on again, and things would be fine. ...for a little while. bottom line: $1800 at the stealer. the xenon's are supposed to last forever. sometimes they don't. i haven't had the problem with my '98, but i watch out for it. i know the parts cost for a xenon assembly is less than $1000 at circle BMW, but i don't know what it takes to "do it yourself" (DIY). anyways, just my experience.

I have a 96 540i with factory xenons. This evening I switched the lights on and the right hand light switched itself off after a few seconds. Switching the headlights off, waiting, then switching them on again produced the same result (on for a few seconds then off).

Any ideas as to what would cause this? Dead bulb? Faulty electronics?

The fact that it works for a short while suggests to me that the bulb is O.K. what do you reckon?
