From my sources, I don't think the SWB E65 is actually smaller than the SWB E38, just looks like it because of the arched styling of the sides of the cars. The SWB 7 is significanly larger than the 5 series, and is the "sportiest" of the 7 series. Remember that the majority of SWB 7s sold in the US are Sport models. The sport packages on the iL models are mostly cosmetic, while the SWB cars get true sport suspension. I think the SWB 7 is a good fit in the US, and BMW should offer both the 745 and 735 (entry car).

Also, with the arrival of the E65, the long wheelbase car becomes the 745Li. I guess this is to realign the BMW numbering system: Coupes are now "Ci" and AWD is "xi". When are the wagons going to become "Ti's"?

According to the data I have, the European (worldwide) lineup for the E65 7 Series will include the following models:





The 7 Series for the USA (Model Year 2002 and 2003) will include the following models:

760iL (2003 Model)


In my opinion, I think that the 7 Series standard wheelbase Sedan (745i) should be dropped from the lineup, at least starting from the 2003 Model Year. If you see the pictures of the standard wheelbase 7 Series, you will notice that it looks smaller. This is because BMW (like Mercedes-Benz) has made its standard wheelbase 7 Series smaller to be better for crowded European and Asian streets. However, in the US, offering the standard wheelbase model makes the 745i closer to the 5 Series Sedan. Because of this (in case of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class (std. wheelbase) competing with the E-Class) Mercedes-Benz dropped the standard wheelbase Sedan from the US market. I think that BMW should do the same, because we Americans like bigger, yet agile cars, better than Europeans.

In place of the 745i, I strongly think that BMW North America should introduce the 735iL. The 3.6 Liter V-8 engine is no slouch, and produces a healthy amount of power for a BMW. The 735iL would offer the space of the 745iL at the price of the 745i (or even lower). Also, BMW would be able to compete head on with Mercedes. (The 735iL would compete with MB S430, the 745iL would compete with the S500, and the 760iL would compete with the S600 - and BMW would likely win)!

Then, in addition to adding the 735iL, BMW could then introduce a model above the 760iL in the US - the L7 Limousine, powered by the same engine in the 760.

Also, to continue, by introducing the 3.6 Liter V-8 in the US, BMW can then update the 5 Series by eliminating the slow 525i and making the 530i the base model. Then there could be a 535i, and then the 545i.

So, here is my proposed modification for the 7 Series (and 5 Series too)

US 7 Series (Model Year 2003/2004)

735iL (3.6 Liter V-8, 272 hp)
745iL (4.4 Liter V-8, 333 hp)
760iL (6.0 Liter V-12, 400? hp)
760 L7 (6.0 Liter V-12, 400? hp)

US 5 Series (Next generation - Model Year 2003/2004)

530i Sedan (3.0 Liter inline 6, 225 hp)
530i Wagon (3.0 Liter inline 6, 225 hp)
535i Sedan (3.6 Liter V-8, 270 hp)
545i Sedan (4.4 Liter V-8, 330 hp)
545i Wagon (4.4 Liter V-8, 330 hp)
