I recently spent over 8 solid hours detailing my CPO '98 740il. The previous owner took real good car of the car, but the faint swirls and scratches were definitely due to car wash brushes.

Be careful in the "touchless" washes though. I too went through one and then watched as the attendants used towels to wipe down the car. As you might expect, the towels were of unknown quality and the guys did not pay much attention to spreading dirt from the bottom up on to the top.

After my day of detailing, that's the last car wash for me.

So i was was driving for a short time tonight behind a nice black 750il circa '98, checking it out, when I was shocked to see it pull into the local car wash (albeit brushless-those rags that slap your car), I had a mind to try to pull in front of the guy to block his path and tell him the error of his ways...
But maybe i'm too anal. the last nice car I had for 9 yrs and never once took it to a car wash.
i figure the detergent alone will ruin paint/clear coat let alone the garbage that collects on the rags and brushes that slap your car as you go through. just curious, anyone have opinions about car washes?
