Overall, I have yet to find any vendor of any manufactured product that can make a claim that all their dealers are great. It's just too hard.
The best a manufacturer can do is design and build in such great quality that their dealers have little to do on the service side but change fluids and do maintenance. Lexus does indeed come close to this.
I owned a Lexus for 7 years and only had about 4 minor problems, none of which stopped me driving the car or had any effect on performance. I wish BMW's could live up to this standard, but this board tells me otherwise.
BMW seems to have a philosophy that mechanical issues are to be expected with performance-oriented cars and that owners should expect to spend time at their dealers shop. Good friends in Germany confirm this attitude. From their vantage point, we have it better here as German customer service is still a rarity regardless of brand.
I've had more issues in 8 months of ownership of a CPO '98 740il than I did in 7 years with a Lexus. If Lexus hadn't made their latest models so damned ugly, I would be driving one now. I do like my 740 very much and am quite disappointed BMW has joined the herd with the design of the new 7. This may be my first and last BMW.
BMW - Great driving cars, just not always a great ownership experience.
was second to none and consistent across all
