First, you'll need a jack. Second, a bucket (8 quarts deep). Next, a scribe, a 15mm(?) socket and ratchet and a phillips screwdriver. Finally, a filter and 8 quarts of oil (your choice).

Always start with the filter. A standard oil wrench will work. Gently, but firmly unscrew the filter cap. Filter should come out with the cap. Have a rag handy. Pop the filter off the cap (they snap in place). Clean up your mess, remove and replace the big O-ring on the cap (use the scribe for leverage to grab the ring), and snap the new filter in place. Do not put the filter back in yet. Some oil will remain in the bottom of the canister until after you drain the oil.

Jack up the car using the left jack point. Jack it up high. Crawl underneath and using the screwdriver, remove the big panel. My 740i has two screws and a big plastic flap. My 540i has one srew and a little plastic door. Once done, use the 15mm socket to break the drain plug loose. Undo by hand while moving the bucket underneath the plug.

While it's draining, take the tops off the eight quarts of oil. Clean the plug and change the plug washer. If you can't find the old one, it's probably still on the oil pan. Do not use two washers; it'll leak. Replace the plug and tighten. Remove the bucket, and reinstall the access flap. Drop the car, remove the jack. Open the oil cap. I use a little funnel here. Then add the oil. Put the cap back on. Check for tools. Start the car and check for leaks. Done!
