I would have it check out. I have a 740iL and have never noticed either smell or sound.

I took delivery of my ‘99 750iL last Thursday (41K miles). I have been having a blast driving around and acquainting myself with all of the doodads.

I have a question about vehicle noise and the transmission odor (OK maybe that’s two in total): Having never owned a steptronic transmission (my other BMW has a six speed) I am not familiar with the noises it "normally" makes. Is it normal for a “humming” sound to come from the transmission when you give the gas? It gets louder as you go faster, but never to an uncomfortable level. Also, as I was tooling around San Francisco yesterday I was forced to take a particularly steep hill. After the second stoplight the transmission smelled bad – the only bummer is I could not tell if it was me, or someone else around me (the windows were open). The smell went away fairly soon after getting to a level surface. Think I should be worried?
