Embracing Change? E65 vs. E38 (archive)

Let me preface this by saying I do not own or drive a BMW (or any other luxury marque, for that matter). I do enjoy browsing through the various discussions.

I was reading some discussions over on the clublexus site, and quite a few folks are in an uproar over the soon-to-be released 2002 ES300. The discussions over there were quite similar to what we have seen here, regarding the new 7.

So, I wonder: as car enthusiasts (who view automobiles as more than just appliances used to provide transportation from Point A to Point B), do we get too familiar with a style (be it Lexus or BMW or Audi, etc.) and are simply afraid of change? Was there a BMW (or other) model that simply took your breath away the first time you saw it? (Perhaps the Z8? XJ8? 355 Spyder?)How did people react to the E38 when it first came out? Didn't the Z3 roadster originally received a somewhat lukewarm response? Any thoughts?
