One of the problems with importing euro-cars, especially german, is that they have spent their lives at considerably higher speeds than US cars. Of two cars with equal mileage, the one that has been driven daily at speeds in excess of 140-150mph will be noticably more worn. If you get one with low miles and not very old, this may not make so much difference. On a 5-6 year old car with perhaps 50-100k miles, it probably will make a difference. Perhaps look for a car in a country that doesn't have many high-speed roads like the german autobahn (Scandinavia - but there rust may be an issue). Also, prices tend to be higher in general throughout Europe, further adding to the potential cost of this option. In the end, it may be worth it to have the conversion done on a well documented US spec car instead.
Keep us posted on this, I'm very interested in the outcome. I continue to dream of a 6-speed in my 740.
My two cents.

I know there are no 5/6 speed 95 or later 740's available in USA. Does anyone know if they are available in Europe?
I currently have a 90 525 5spd w/200K miles. The car still rides like new. However, I've decided to give the car to my nephew who turns 16 next month. I like to get an E38 but really don't want an automatic.
If I have to import one from Europe I might be willing to do it if the cost is reasonable.
