I have made the following observations about the use of the BMW TimePort (Motorola) phone while in my vehicle.

1. While using the phone hands free in the car, if another call comes in, (Call Waiting), you cannot answer it without removing the phone from the cradle, and eliminating the hands free. If this is a software oversight, please fix it.

2. The user is unable to insert an "*", or "#" verbally. This makes it impossible to insert your password while answering your voice mail.

3. The user is inable to chain batches of numbers with wait periods via the voice system, and the user is unable to associaite a voice command to an already stored number. Because of this we are not able to deal calling large companys where a voice mail system requires addtional numbers to connect to an extention inside the company.

i.e. 17145551212 {wait 2 seconds} 4168

where 4168 is an extention you with to dial after the automated attendent answers.

Is this an oversight, poor software design, or just had to get it out in a hurry and didn't have time.

I have also had the two following incendents happen to me since I have purchased my 740il.

1. all controls on the left side of the stering wheel were inoperable, where they did not step through phone numbers, and did not effect the radio. I had to stop the car, turn off the engine, and restart before the problem went away. Kind of like rebooting a computer.

2. Once connected to an automated attendent I began to dial additional number to call an extention inside the company. After going to the phone menu area and selecting the first number, it took about 4 seconds before the system actually initiated the tone. It just so happens that the first number of the extention was the same number to access the directory, so I was unable to dial the extention. I pulled off the road, turned off the engine, and restarted but the problem still did not go away. When I got to my office and parked the car, by the next time I got in the problem was gone. I have use the phone several other times without a problem.

These types of problems are found in the well known software operating systems (like Windows 9x,Me,Nt,2000), but are not acceptable in hardware designs. I hope someone from BMW reads this and attempts to fix these problems. This is actually my second 740, I had similar problems in the first, but it was not enough to switch to another auto. I just hope to believe that BMW has enough pride their product as it appears in the construction of there vehicles to extend that pride to the software/firmware systems. I seem to be alot less tolerante of a bugs in my car, than I am with my computer. Microsoft is lucky that some people feel this way, but this feeling is going away and eventually we will demand perfection from operating systems as well. I sure hope that I will not have to wait 3 (three) years for a fix in another car. The problems I have identified in the phone system are simple requiements which most everyday users will require, please fix these oversights and upgrade as soon as possible.

Thank you,
