i had this loud rattling sound and my local mechanic told me that the cat is gone as i had suspected. the car is a '97 740il with 27,000 miles. I know about the 8 year/ 80,000 mile federal warranty but there is a problem. this car was a stolen recovery vehicle that had a new VIN issued. Due to the re-VIN Bmw would not honor the regular 4yr/50,000 warranty. So now i wonder if the federal warranty will not be honored as well. The car was not parted out because i have a letter certifying that there was less than $1,000 worth of damage. Does anyone know if i am covered or not? Also is there any BMW dealer in the nyc or nj area (i live in nyc) that would try their best to help me because my local dealer is not that great and did not really try to help me with my original warranty problem. i would be willing to drive out far to another dealer if it was worth it.

thanks,
Paul
