Help. Underbody Panel Damage Common? (archive)

Have had two incidents lately of tearing up the panels under the car. Only one was knowingly related to running over something. This was a piece of truck tire tread, but it was hardly noticeable when it happened. This damage was from the driver's side front wheel well back. The first one was under the passenger front seat. Is there a known weakness in 98 vintage E38 here?
