Dawg,
I ran into the same issue of availability for the Michelins, so I ordered a set of Dunlop SP9000s. According to the spec sheet @ TireRack.com, the Dunlops have a higher wear rating than the Michelins (UTQG 280 vs. UTQG 220). I went with 255/45/18 for the front & 285/50/18 for the rear. My reason for choosing the 285/50 for the rear is an attempt to increase the speed of the car at the track. Two Reisentoter PCA track events are coming up in the fall, so I hope to post some info as to how the Dunlops compare to the Michelins.
The 285/50s have an overall diameter of 29.2" and are 710 rotations per mile which is 58 rotations fewer than the OEM 768 (235/60/16 Continentals). I believe the 29" tall tires will fit the rear, and hopefully this will compensate for BMW's 8-10 mph overstating of speed on the speedometer and it will improve the top speed.

One last point, The Dunlops were less expensive $996.00/set vs. $1.140.00/set for the Michelins.
Drive carefully.
Simeon
